I just finished watching a new Chinese movie with English subtitles, "Finding Mr. Right". It was about Chinese women coming to America to have their children, since they are legally not able to have the child in China. It sounded true, so I had to do some research on this one child law. And I see quite a few pregnant women and people with 2 kids.
When Mao took over in 1949 he wanted a large population and banned contraceptives and birth control and deemed it the woman's patriotic duty to have kids. From 1956-1961 due to his stellar governing style 18-33 million people die due to famine. Finally they get rid of him in 1961. But bring him back in 1966 for the Cultural Revolution. Population can't be controlled. Mao is finally gone in 1976 and the new head puts into place the One Child policy in 1978.
This law only affects about 36%, the rest get around it if they:
*live in rural areas, they need children to plow their fields
*if they are one of the 55 Chinese minorities, not Han Chinese
*twins
*children of single parents are allowed 2 kids
*if a spouse is foreign
*the first child is physically impaired or disabled.
*and I've heard if they get remarried, the new couple gets to have their own child
What happens if they do not fall into one of these legal categories?
*get fined according to their pay scale
*can get black listed in their job field
*can get fired
*have to pay for education of both the legal first child and illegal 2nd child
*can lose property if can't pay the fine
*forced sterilization and abortion was common up to 2002 and is still done in some places!
You still want a 2nd child?
*pay the fine
*connection to government
*give away your child to family member who has none
*bribe a Dr. to say the children born years apart are twins!
*have the child outside of China, thus a movie
What is this doing to society: Well they will evaluate in 2015 whether to stop this. But for now they've ended up with spoiled porkers. Gee you don't say 6 adults(parents and 2 sets of grandparents) giving into all the wants and needs of 1 child won't make them spoiled. And of course they all have to feed him. I think it's an "Oh he likes my food better than yours." That's how I literally feel sometimes with my three little piggies. Also too many boys and not enough girls since they select the boys and either abort girls or fill the orphanages with them. And now they have an aging population.
