Mine as well expose her right away to Chinese foods. I thought pretty mild. Fried fish, fried shrimp, fried wings, see sounds American so far. And then radish dish, eggplant diss, garlic broccoli. Two days later and that restaurant is closed and emptied out. I wondered how they stayed in business when they opened after 5pm.
She was up before the kids, but knows how to stay quiet. So she walked them to school with me. Aidan thought if he didn't wear his uniform he wouldn't have to go to school. Smart, but it didn't work.
We headed to Qienmen shopping street. When she made her first purchase I realized I forgot to go to the bank! So we wasted a lot of time trying to ask where there was a bank/ATM. Those words are not universal. They call ATM a CRS (cash revolving system). I got us meat on a stick for lunch. It was too spicy for her. Followed by Haw on a stick and golden orange on a stick. She was successfull on finding a winter and spring coat! I lent her my hat and either allergies or polution, I ended up with a horrible sinus headache. It was late, we would never make it back on time by bus to pick the boys up from school. So we took a taxi, without having the address or knowing how to say it, except for the road. I just made sure to be on the side of the road heading back home. I pointed straight and he was humored enough to drive us. I feared him saying no and get out. So we made it, 25 min taxi ride for $5 usd, we got to school, just as Aidan's class was coming out. Close.
Dinner was some other favorites at Porridge. The boys got their multi pink, red & purple porridge, chinese pizza as I call them, meat enclosed in a dumpling like crust pan fried. Tofu rolls with veggitables inside, cold cooked spinach with garlic and peanuts, yaki soba type of noodle.
Day two, more shopping at the Haggler alley. We got a good morning squish on the bus. At the stop before ours a guy couldn't get out in time. This had my mom freaking out. We made it out unharmed. I can't turn down not going into a 10rmb store, just like I can't turn down going into a dollar store. So bought a slap wrist watch here, a hair clip there.
I took her into the massive building for fish and meats. She was disgusted by the smell and sights. She did not care for the small stalls of shopping and asked if all the shopping is like this. Sort of, if you want it cheap. The large numbers don't freak me out so much anymore, her eyes get so big, then I have to tell her it was only $20usd. Oh. She wanted more normal food for lunch, so we had Big Macs.
Her impression so far? Dirty, crazy crossing the streets, and it doesn't look safe anywhere. She asked me is there any part of town that is good. I said we are in a good part of town, it all looks like this.
